During this time, Northwest Airlines flew different several different dash series of the DC-9 with the -51 being the largest and final ones flown. Northwest DC-9?s are powered by three Pratt & Whitney JT8D series engines with a thrust rating of 13,000 to 15,500 lbs of thrust per engine. The DC-9's were considered one of the work horses in commercial aviation and Northwest operated them until the merger with Delta Airlines in 2009 where they are still being flown.
